Highlights

  • Jujutsu Kaisen highlights the strongest characters like Gojo and Sukuna, shaped by the significant Heian Era conditions.
  • The Heian Era, a difficult time, bred powerful sorcerers due to belief, survival, and rampant Cursed Spirits in Japan.
  • Uraume, Takako Uro, Yurozu, and Angel were notable sorcerers, showcasing immense power in the Golden Age of Sorcery.

Jujutsu Kaisen has always put a great deal of stress on the strongest characters in the series. In the modern day, it was Gojo, a sorcerer so powerful that just his birth marked a significant shift in the balance of Cursed Energy, as stronger Cursed Spirits were needed to compensate for his immense strength. Sukuna is the character that is considered to be the strongest of all time, mainly due to how the conditions of the Heian Era shaped him.

The Heian Era itself is quite possibly the most important period in all of Jujutsu Kaisen, as some of the strongest characters in the series existed at that time. But why is that? What was so significant in this period that led to not only the strongest sorcerer/curse of all time, but also the average Jujutsu user being superior to the ones commonly seen today? Let’s break down what the Heian Era was and why it was so significant!

What Was The Heian Era?

The Heian Era, both in Jujutsu Kaisen and in real life, was considered to be the last age of the ‘Classical Period’ of Japan. This meant that things were far removed from how they are in the modern world, as industrialization and modernization have had a huge part to play in the changes to the quality of life for the average citizen. The economic climate of the world has also changed, with Japan being one of the easiest and safest countries to live in in the entire world.

This just goes to show how easy life is now as compared to one thousand years ago, during the Heian Era. This was an incredibly difficult time for anyone to live in, since the quality of life was extremely poor, leading to people having an existence that was more akin to surviving than living. Food was scarce, diseases were rampant, and life expectancy was very low, which meant that the overall atmosphere in this era was very negative.

Due to this negativity, Cursed Spirits were far more rampant in the world, leading to the average Jujutsu sorcerer being far more powerful than the ones of today due to their need to survive. This led to incredibly powerful Cursed Techniques and characters, many of whom have been reawakened in the Culling Game, and their strength made them so formidable that this period was known as the ‘Golden Age of Sorcery’.

Moreover, it was during this time period that there was also a far greater belief in Shintoism and Buddhism, and this is also where the 3 Great Families of Jujutsu society can trace their lineage. Taira no Masakado, Emperor Sutoku, and Sugawara no Michizane are called the 3 Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan, the latter of whom is considered to be the progenitor of the modern-day Gojo clan. This heavier emphasis on belief and religion, coupled with the need to survive, made this era a hotbed for the most powerful sorcerers.

Hierarchy Of The Heian Era

In the modern day, no sorcerer can quite reach the levels of Satoru Gojo. Born into the most influential of the 3 Great Families and having the most overpowered combination of techniques in the entire series, Gojo was completely in a realm of his own, and his power made him untouchable. Since his Limitless Technique made it so that no one could ever touch him, he became the strongest character that no one could defy.

Gojo’s journey mirrors that of Sukuna, who was the strongest of the Heian Era. His unparalleled might was so incredible that he essentially ruled over this entire period with an iron fist. He was born a regular human with the ability to use Jujutsu, however, he turned his back on humanity, becoming cannibalistic and selfish to the point where he transformed into a Cursed Spirit. With his incredibly powerful Cursed Technique and knowledge of Jujutsu, he wiped clean all of his opposition.

A system that isn’t based purely on strength is boring if you ask me.

Other Notable Sorcerers

Despite Sukuna being far superior to anyone else in that, or any other, era, there were still several notable and incredibly powerful sorcerers. First of these is Uraume, an extremely powerful Curse User affiliated with Sukuna. Uraume’s Cursed Technique is called Ice Formation and lets them create and manipulate ice as much as they wished, which was quite strong as it let them work for Sukuna, someone who respects only strength.

Other than Uraume, there was Takako Uro, an immensely powerful sorcerer who was the captain of the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad, a legendary group of assassins allied with the Fujiwara Clan. This clan was quite strong but was torn to shreds by Sukuna. Uro had the Cursed Technique of Sky Manipulation, which was incredibly versatile and powerful, making her one of the strongest characters of the Heian Era.

Moreover, there was also Yurozu, another powerful sorcerer who had the Construction Cursed Technique, which let her construct objects using her Cursed Energy. Though this is the same technique as that of Mai Zenin, it is far more powerful. Finally, there is Angel, who also worked against Sukuna. Her technique is arguably the most powerful one in the series, as it can negate all other techniques regardless of their strength or complexity.

The Heian Era was an important period for the world of Jujutsu Kaisen as it birthed many of the strongest characters of all time. However, most of it remains a mystery, especially related to Sukuna’s backstory and hidden techniques. Now, all fans can do is remain patient until Gege Akutami drops more information about this elusive era!

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
