Bleach: 7 Popular Fan Theories

The Bleach manga may have ended back in 2016, but Tite Kubo still left a few mysteries within the story that many fans have tried to explain through their own theories. As anyone who has watched or read Bleach will know very well, the world and its characters are all incredibly unpredictable, meaning literally anything can happen, no matter how outlandish it might seem at first.

Additionally, because of the way Tite Kubo writes the story, he often only focuses on what is most important and relevant at the time, meaning that while anything could be going on behind the scenes, fans often don’t get to see it, especially since the author loves his mysteries. In fact, there have even been a few times when he’s purposefully led fans down the wrong direction in an attempt to encourage them to figure out what’s going on by using their own initiative, and this has inevitably led to some fascinating theories, with many of the more popular ones seeming incredibly plausible.

7 Yoruichi Returned To The Soul Society

Yoruichi Could Have Easily Returned To The Soul Society Multiple Times Without Being Seen

Yorucihi is instrumental in helping Ichigo and his allies reach the Soul Society during their mission to save Rukia from captivity, but since she usually takes the form of a cat who roams around Urahara’s shop, it seems as though she hadn’t actually returned home in a while. However, while it’s confirmed that she left the Soul Society years ago, many fans have theorized that she actually returned more than a few times in secret, so that she could keep an eye on the captains, while also making sure Soi Fon stayed out of trouble.

After all, if there’s anyone who would be able to enter the Soul Society without being identified, it would undoubtedly be the previous captain of the stealthy Second Division, especially since she also lives with the one man who is able to grant her access to it in the first place.

6 Ichigo’s Release Command

Ichigo’s Unique Release Command Is Theorized To Be The Name Of The Series Itself

images/news/2024/1/14/popular-bleach-fan-theories_2.jpg

For most Soul Reapers, a special command must be said in order to activate their Zanpakuto, but Ichigo is the exception. Throughout the series, he is constantly shown to be able to awaken his blade without needing to call out a command, but a lot of fans think that the original intent was actually for Ichigo’s specific callout to be none other than the word “Bleach”.

For starters, it would explain the admittedly fairly strange title of the series, but considering Ichigo doesn’t acquire his true Shikai until the end of the series, it would also be a neat way to wrap the story up if he were to say it at that moment. The actual meaning behind the word if it were to be used as Ichigo’s command could vary, but in its simplest form, it could potentially mean that he’s ‘bleached’ over his past, and is becoming someone completely new, especially after learning about his true heritage.

5 Aizen Knew About Ulquiorra’s Second Release

There’s A Few Hints That Suggest Aizen Was Well Aware Of Ulquiorra’s Powerful Second Release

images/news/2024/1/14/popular-bleach-fan-theories_3.jpg

Ichigo thought he knew what he was getting into when coming up against Espada number 4, but near the beginning of their bout, Ulquiorra actually reveals that he has managed to attain a second release form, stating that nobody, not even Aizen, knows about it. This already seems a little strange considering that Aizen is literally a renowned scientist, so surely he would be able to keep tabs on the progression of his most valued soldiers, but it would also make a lot of sense why he specifically chose Ulquiorra to face Ichigo in Hueco Mundo.

Baraggan, for example, is ranked as the second Espada who possesses an incredibly strong decaying ability, while Stark is immensely powerful thanks to his Gran Rey Cero pistols, which even the likes of the mighty Shunsui had trouble avoiding. Yet, despite these incredibly strong units being available, Aizen decides to move them all into Karakura Town with only Ulquiorra left to face Ichigo, so it can be safe to assume that he knew about this devastating second release all along.

4 Chad’s Secret Fullbring

Some Fans Believe Chad’s Precious Coin Could Be Incredibly Powerful As A Fullbring Weapon

Fullbring is a concept that is introduced to the series much later on in the story, and it essentially refers to manipulating souls that are within physical objects. As Ginjo explains though, most of the time, these particular objects need to be something that the user has a strong emotional connection to, so for himself, this would be his prized necklace that always hangs around his neck.

In the case of Chad though, who is revealed to have Fullbring powers of his own, he claims that his skin is what he’s using to activate his powers, but a lot of fans theorize that he also has a much stronger object that he could utilize, the coin gifted to him from his Abuelo. Chad’s grandfather taught him about the importance of using his large structure to protect rather than antagonize, and it’s therefore been theorized that because Chad’s coin is all he has left of his beloved relative, it could potentially become something incredibly powerful if activated.

3 Yamamoto Restricted Unohana From Fighting

Even The Likes Of Yamamoto Would Have Trouble Containing Unohana If She Was Let Loose

For much of the series, Unohana is depicted as a sweet and loving member of the Gotei 13 who may be pretty knowledgeable about medicine and healing techniques, but who also avoids conflict at all costs. However, as is revealed in the Thousand Year Blood War arc, Unohana was actually once a Kenpachi, and was one of the most bloodthirsty warriors the Soul Society has ever seen.

The theory goes that, because Unohana was so ridiculously powerful, even more so than Zaraki Kenpachi, Yamamoto made the decision to restrict her from fighting altogether, since there’s no way to know just how much carnage she would be able to cause if let loose. There are even a few moments in the story where Unohana could initiate a battle, but refuses to, such as in Hueco Mundo when she’s face to face with the Exequais soldiers. It also seems strange that she is only free to show her more ruthless side after Yamamoto falls at the hands of Yhwach.

2 The True Nature Of The Final Getsuga Tensho

Ichigo May Have Tapped Into His Quincy Powers To Unleash The Final Getsuga Tensho

images/news/2024/1/14/popular-bleach-fan-theories_6.jpg

Once Aizen becomes one with the Hogyoku during his invasion of Karakura Town, he becomes more or less godlike, with seemingly no one left standing in his way to stop him, that is, until Ichigo returns from his training in the Garganta. While Ichigo pretty much embarrasses Aizen for much of their fight, his final attack comes from a form he calls the “Final Getsuga Tensho”, and while it’s shown to be absurdly powerful, there’s virtually no information given as to what it even is, and how Ichigo attained it.

With that being said, it seems as though there are a few hints that this form is actually Ichigo tapping into his Quincy powers, and more specifically, Letz Stil. Longtime fans may remember this ability being used by Uryu during his fight with Mayuri in the Soul Society, and just like Uryu, Ichigo’s arms change in this form, he regains a single “wing” of Reiatsu, and he also loses all of his powers after using it. Considering just how much Kubo loves foreshadowing in the series, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility to assume that this was a subtle hint to a much bigger reveal about Ichigo’s Quincy heritage later on.

1 Aizen’s Bankai Is Too Powerful

Aizen’s Bankai May Just Be One Of The Strongest Abilities In All Of Shonen

images/news/2024/1/14/popular-bleach-fan-theories_7.jpg

Aizen’s Zanpakuto is already ridiculously strong in its Shikai form, possessing the ability to completely hypnotize anyone who lays eyes on it, but this has begged the question of what exactly the sword’s Bankai ability is. It’s clear that he has achieved his Bankai, especially since he’s able to release his Shikai without its command, but a lot of fans feel that the reason he never unleashes it, even when pushed to his limit by Ichigo, is because it’s simply too strong to control.

Since Kyoka Suigetsu’s Shikai is able to control the senses of its opponents, some think that the sword’s Bankai could actually warp reality itself, something that even the likes of Yhwach would be terrified by. Others suspect that Aizen’s Bankai could come at the cost of his own life, and considering his grand plans of replacing the Soul King, using it just wouldn’t be worth the risk. Either way, it seems highly probable that Aizen’s Bankai is one of the strongest abilities in all of shonen, which is why even someone of his caliber kept it under wraps for so long.
