Jujutsu Kaisen is currently in its ending phase and fans already know that the series is edging closer to its conclusion with each passing chapter. The author of the story, Gege Akutami, mentioned towards the end of last year that the series was going to be concluding soon and that it won’t continue beyond 2024.
Of course, the plans of the author can change at any point, but it is possible that the series might actually continue beyond 2024 as well, however, either way, what fans know for sure is that JJK is in the final stages and that the Culling Game arc might actually be the end of the whole story. With Sukuna having finally reincarnated, the incredible threat that stands in front of the heroes appears to be too overwhelming. It is entirely possible that Sukuna might actually end up winning this whole thing and being the true victor, however, whether that would make for a good ending or not remains to be seen.
Sukuna’s Victories So Far
Sukuna has fought many amazing battles after returning so far. Of course, the most significant battle that he has fought came against Gojo Satoru, who was unsealed in the Culling Game arc. Using the power of Jacob’s Ladder, Gojo was eventually brought back and he ended up fighting against Sukuna in Shinjuku. This incredible battle was such that it gripped the fans for months. This fight saw Gojo and Sukuna bring out their A Game and it was such that it can be considered a battle of extreme difficulty. It was quite clear for the fans to see that this was a battle that could have gone either way. Gojo had moments where he was overwhelmingly dominant in the fight and Sukuna had such moments as well.
Both of these characters were incredibly close to each other in terms of strength, however, only one could have won the fight and that was none other than Sukuna. By using his world-cutting slash, he was able to slice through the Infinity and kill Gojo. Gojo ended up losing this battle terribly, and with that, the heroes lost their best hope of actually emerging out of this as victors. After Gojodied, Kashimo jumped in, and even though he used his incredible cursed technique to push Sukuna into a corner, it did not work. Sukuna simply reincarnated into his true form and utterly crushed Kashimo in battle, making his whole character rather pointless.
From there onwards, the remaining fighters jumped into battle. Fans saw Yuji and Higuruma attempt to fight Sukuna, and they were later joined by Kusakabe and Ino. All of them are currently taking on Sukuna and it appears that some have already fallen. Fans do not expect much from Kusakabe and Ino anyway. The bulk of the hard work is to be done by none other than Higuruma and Yuji.
Over the course of the last few chapters, fans saw Higuruma do the heavy lifting and seal away the cursed tool that Sukuna possessed. He even gave Sukuna quite an interesting fight and piqued his interest. Higuruma was a genius fighter who progressed at blistering speed, however, his lack of battle experience and the vast difference in strength between him and Sukuna saw to it that he fell in battle to him. He entrusted everything to Yuji and, from here onwards, everything rests on his shoulders.
Sukuna Vs Yuji
Sukuna versus Yuji is going to be the main battle of the Culling Game arc and one that fans should be betting everything on. This is the fight that will see Yuji bring out his best and that goes without saying. Fans know Yuji to be quite a boring character so far and that is something that even Sukuna believes. However, there will be a major surprise here in this battle and Yuji will meet Sukuna’s expectations and go beyond them. Regardless of which way this battle goes, one thing that fans can be sure of is that Yuji is going to showcase his true talent and true abilities here and push Sukuna into a corner.
However, then, the question remains as to whether Yuji will win this fight or not. While he could potentially win this might, there is an equal chance for him to lose this clash as well. This is especially true given that whoever Sukuna has a fight against gets the plot turned against them. Sukuna manages to wriggle out of every dangerous situation using very convenient methods. As such, it is possible that Yuji could very well end up dying in this battle, and if that were to happen, then Sukuna might actually end up being the victor and the bad guys could win in JJK, which would be an intriguing idea to some fans.
Would Sukuna Winning Be A Good Ending?
The idea of Sukuna winning and the bad guys being the true victors of JJK might be appealing to some. This is because good guys almost always win their respective battles and the evil is always crushed in the end. However, the theme is maintained for a reason. Fans invest countless hours into the progress of these characters and they expect for their story arcs to have some sort of positive conclusion. While it is clear that not everyone can have a good ending, and that there are some that end up falling along the way, such as Nobara and potentially even Gojo, their sacrifices have to mean something.
That is the essence of good storytelling. For instance, when Nobara fell in battle, it was a life-changing experience for Yuji and it matured him in many ways. That eventually helped him defeat Mahito. Similarly, Gojo and Higuruma’s death have to mean something, and Gojo’s death simply cannot be for absolutely nothing because that would ruin the entire character of Gojo, the purpose of him, along with the purpose of the characters of Higuruma, and even Yuji himself. Making the bad guys win would simply be like throwing away every single storyline that the fans have invested in from the very beginning.
Over the years, fans have likely been attached to multiple characters and even though some of them have died, their sacrifices have to result in something. Making Sukuna and the bad guys win would be like giving up on every storyline that the author has worked hard on, and throwing them into the trash. While it is an appealing idea to make the bad guys win simply because of the chaos that it would cause, it is almost never a good ending for any story.
The ending would be bleak and would actually ruin the entire legacy of JJK. Fans need to be careful what they wish for, however, with Gege at the pen, asking for good writing is a challenge. Regardless, fans can rest assured that Gege will absolutely not make Sukuna win and, if he does that, then JJK’s legacy would be tainted very badly.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 248, is set to be January 21, 2024.
