Warning: The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen 258, “Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 31” by Gege Akutami, translated by John Werry, and Lettered by Snir Aharon, available in English from MangaPlus.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 259 dropped earlier today and continued the incredibly intense battle in Shinjuku. This week’s chapter was absolutely phenomenal, but also somewhat different than the others. For starters, JJK chapter 259 focused more on the ferocity of Sukuna’s Divine Flame, and at the same time, the loss of yet another beloved character in the series.

Along with that, it also focused on the return of a powerful character who fans have come to love over the years. While not the best chapter in this arc, it was certainly a solid addition and it sets up a very exciting battle close to the conclusion of the series.

Sukuna Unleashes Divine Flame

Sukuna’s Divine Flame Wreaked Havoc On The Battlefield

JJK chapter 259 finally saw Sukuna unleash Divine Flame. This is something that fans had expected would happen in this chapter and that was simply down to the fact that he started the preparation for this attack in the previous chapter. Immediately after he unleashed his slashes on the sorcerers, Sukuna opened the door to the Divine Flame in an attempt to get rid of the Sorcerers. In the midst of all this, fans also finally got an explanation as to how Sukuna’s Divine Flame works in the first place. According to the author, to actually access the Divine Flame, Sukuna has to go through the process of Cleave and Dismantle first. Only after he prepares the ingredients with Cleave and Dismantle can he access the flame of cooking, which is the Divine Flame. The author also goes on to explain that Divine Flame, while very powerful, lacks in terms of speed and range.

This was a massive problem for Sukuna, and because of that, he had made a Binding Vow, which saw to it that this attack overcame these weaknesses. However, on the downside, he could not use it on a wide range of targets outside his domain anymore. Essentially, Sukuna’s Divine flame was restricted to a large area only inside his domain, which is what he did in this chapter. Outside of his domains, he would not be able to utilize Divine Flame on multiple targets. That said, this worked very well for Sukuna. This would mean that inside of his domain, Sukuna can essentially reduce all life forms to ash after obliterating them with his Malevolent Shrine first.

In JJK chapter 259, Sukuna unleashed the power of these magnificent flames, and fans could see giant explosions taking place inside of Sukuna’s domain, which eventually led to even the earth being scorched completely. Sukuna’s firepower was absolutely magnificent, likely on a similar level to Gojo’s Hollow Purple. Speaking of Gojo, the author also went on to say that Sukuna could not have used Divine Flame against Gojo. This was simply down to the fact that Sukuna had to keep changing the laws of his domain constantly during his fight against Gojo, and the many Binding Vows that he had to undertake during this fight meant that this was simply not possible for him to do.

Furthermore, without bypassing Infinity, it would have been impossible for Sukuna to actually hit Gojo with Divine Flame, which was especially highlighted in this chapter, as this attack was blocked by an individual.

Choso Sacrifices Himself For Yuji

Choso Protected His Brother With His Last Bit Of Energy

As soon as Sukuna unleashed his Divine Flame, fans knew that Yuji absolutely could not be left for the dead. This is precisely why fans knew that some sorcerers would end up sacrificing themselves for the protagonist, and that is precisely what happened. Of course, the only one who would be willing to do this was Choso. He rushed to Yuji’s aid in this chapter and created a blood-like domain around his little brother. Shielding his brother with his body, Choso was essentially burned to a crisp and completely killed in a single instant. This was an emotional moment for the fans, however, it was also one that they had seen coming. There was absolutely no other way for Yuji to survive, however, with Choso’s barrier, he was able to emerge from this attack without even a single burn.

Meanwhile, Choso was happy to sacrifice himself for Yuji and the two even got to exchange a very heartfelt conversation. Choso told Yuji that he was sorry for being a bad big brother, however, Yuji, being the kind guy that he is, reminded him that he was there for him in his darkest times, and that in itself is more than enough. Choso then went on to move to the afterlife, where he would likely reunite with his brothers, Eso and Kechizu. He also mentioned that he would have to apologize to Yuki as well, a nod to the relationship they fostered earlier in the arc. He also entrusted the rest to Yuji, and from here onwards, it is up to him to stop the greatest evil of all, Ryomen Sukuna.

Jjk chapter 259 saw Yuji being shaken down to his very core. As soon as he emerged from Choso’s domain, he knew that his brother was no more. However, his biggest fear was that everyone around him had also died. Just when he was about to fall to his knees and crumble, a mysterious individual appeared out of nowhere in an attempt to aid Yuji. This was none other than Aoi Toto, another individual who calls Yuji his brother. Fans have been waiting for Todo’s return for quite a while and finally, the author has delivered upon this end.

Todo mentioned that he saved all the others with his Boogie Woogie, thanks to a collaboration with Mei Mei, and that they are likely safe now. However, he mentioned that Choso and Yuji were at the epicenter of the domain, which is why they were out of his range, and thus Choso ended up dying. Regardless, the goal for him here is to help Yuji take down Sukuna, and Choso has now officially joined the battle for good. It is going to be incredibly exciting to see how this battle pans out from here onwards, and thanks to Toto, Yuji has steeled his resolve once again. What’s even more exciting is the fact that Sukuna cannot use his cursed technique for a while, due to utilizing the powerful domain moments ago, and now, the ball is in the court of these two powerful sorcerers. From here onwards, Sukuna will most likely endure a heavy beating, and it will be interesting to see if the battle ends here for him or not.
