One Piece fans have met hundreds of characters over the years. Most of these characters are pirates, but a number of them are part of the Revolutionary Army. Sabo is the army’s chief of staff, and he is a very capable Haki user. He also possesses a Devil Fruit which gives him the ability to create and transform into fire. Sabo has developed relationships with several One Piece characters, but only a handful of those characters can be considered his friends.
Most of Sabo’s friends are revolutionaries because he’s been with the army for more than a decade. He’s known some of his friends since childhood, and he considers a few of them to be family. Unfortunately, Sabo forgot about them because a World Noble destroyed his ship. He survived the ordeal, but he sustained amnesia. Luckily, he has since regained those memories.
9 Curly Dadan
Foster Mother

- Biggest Accomplishment: Saving Luffy & Ace from Bluejam
Curly Dadan lives near Foosha Village, and she is the boss of the Dadan bandit family. She may be a criminal, but she is very good friends with Monkey D. Garp – Luffy’s grandfather. Garp entrusted Dadan with Luffy and Ace, and she cared for Sabo too when he moved into her house.
Dadan became Sabo’s foster mother, and she cared for all three despite being a typical ill-tempered bandit. She was saddened when she learned about Sabo’s apparent death at the hands of a World Noble. Dadan found out very recently that Sabo is still alive, and she cried her eyes out when she read about him in the newspaper..
8 Nico Robin
Very Friendly Relationship

- Biggest Accomplishment: Defeat Black Maria of the Beast Pirates
Nico Robin is the archeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates, and she met Sabo after Kuma used his Devil Fruit to send her to the Revolutionaries on Tequila Wolf. They developed a very friendly relationship during the two-year timeskip, and they were happy to see each other again in Dressrosa.
Sabo was there when Robin learned how to use Fish-Man Karate and they would exchange stories. She learned Sabo’s backstory and his brotherly relationship with Luffy – which helped to cement their friendship. Following the events on Dressrosa, Sabo asked the crew to watch over Luffy and Robin happily agreed.
7 The Revolutionary Commanders
Good Friends

Karasu, Belo Betty, Morley, and Lindburgh each command one of the Revolutionary Army’s four main branches. Sabo outranks them, but he has a casual and friendly relationship with each of them. When Lindburgh informed Sabo that they would be late for the Mary Geoise operation, Sabo did not care because he was only concerned with their safety.
During the Reverie, Sabo witnessed Imu sitting on the Empty Throne. When he and the commanders left Mary Geoise, Sabo separated himself from the commanders before communicating with Dragon because he did not want to risk any of their lives with the information.
6 Bartholomew Kuma
Good Friends

- Biggest Accomplishment: Sacrificing Himself to save Bonney’s Life
The World Government painted Bartholomew Kuma as a horrible tyrant, but he was actually a very kind and gentle person. Sabo met Kuma when he was still a very young, and Kuma helped to train the young Revolutionary. The two became good friends, and Sabo was always thrilled whenever Kuma returned.
When Sabo infiltrated Mary Geoise, he saw that Kuma had been turned into one of the Celestial Dragons’ slaves. He hated how Kuma was being treated, and insisted on altering the Revolutionary Army’s mission so they could rescue him.
5 Hack
Close Ally & Friend

- Biggest Accomplishment: Protecting King Riku in Dressrosa
Sabo went to Dressrosa because he wanted to get Ace’s Devil Fruit, but he also wanted to stop Doflamingo’s weapons trafficking operation. Hack was one of the Revolutionaries who accompanied Sabo to Dressrosa.
When Sabo joined the Revolutionaries, Hack agreed to teach him Fish-Man Karate, but the training did not last long because Sabo was already a decent fighter. They have worked closely ever since, and they developed a strong friendship. Sabo likes to neglect his everyday duties, and he leaves his post quite often. This frustrates Hack, but in a comical way.
4 Koala
Close Ally & Friend
- Debuted in Manga Chapter 622; Anime Episode 541
- Revolutionary Army Officer
- Biggest Accomplishment: Helped to Save Luffy From Jesus Burgess
The Celestial Dragons turned Koala into a slave when she was a child, and she would get beaten every time she cried. She was freed by Fisher Tiger, but she never forgot what she went through. This caused her to join the Revolutionary Army a few years later, and that is how she met Sabo. They have been working together for years and they have become very good friends.
When Sabo learned about Ace’s death, all of his memories returned and he was left devastated. Koala was there to comfort him, and she stayed by his bed for three days. Their relationship is similar to Luffy and Nami’s in the sense that she really cares about him, but will chastise him if he does something foolish.
3 Monkey D. Dragon
Saved & Trained Sabo
- Debuted in Manga Chapter 100; Anime Episode 52
- Leader of the Revolutionary Army
- Biggest Accomplishment: Saving Luffy From Smoker
Monkey D. Dragon is the most wanted person in the world because he is the leader of the Revolutionary Army. He met Sabo when he was still a noble, and he was impressed by Sabo’s hatred of the nobility. When Sabo’s ship was destroyed by a World Noble, Dragon was the one who saved him.
When Hack stopped training Sabo, Dragon started to train him personally. They have known each other for 12 years, and they are each other’s most trusted ally. Dragon may be Sabo’s superior, but Dragon is more like an adopted father.
2 Portgas D. Ace
Adopted Brother

- Biggest Accomplishment: Saving Luffy’s Life at Marineford
Sabo met Ace shortly after leaving the Goa Kingdom, and they quickly bonded because they both wanted to become pirates. They got along very well and started robbing people in Gray Terminal in order to fund their future pirate endeavors. Some time later, he exchanged sake with Ace and Luffy – which signified their sworn brotherhood.
Unfortunately, Sabo lost all memory of Ace and Luffy when his ship was destroyed, but he regained those memories 12 years later. He loved Ace, and the pain of his death caused him to lose consciousness for three days. He went out of his way to acquire Ace’s Flame-Flame Fruit because he wanted to honor his brother’s memory.
1 Monkey D. Luffy
Only Surviving Adopted Brother
- Debuted in Manga Chapter 1/ Anime Episode 1
- Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates
- Biggest Accomplishment: Defeating Kaido in Wano
Sabo was not fond of Luffy when they first met – in fact he told Ace they needed to kill him to make sure he could not tell anyone about their treasure stash. When Luffy was captured by pirates, he refused to give them any information and Sabo’s attitude towards him instantly changed.
Luffy became Sabo’s brother, and he stated that Sabo was kinder than Ace. Luffy was devastated when he heard Sabo had died, and he burst into tears when they reunited in Dressrosa. Sabo may have forgotten about him, but his love for Luffy returned along with his memories. They may be on different journeys, but Sabo still wants his little brother to be taken care of.
