Star Wars fans have mixed opinions about Jedi becoming warriors after Obi-Wan Kenobi praised Anakin Skywalker for being a great fighter.
Anakin has an extended family in Star Wars, and one of the significant figures in his life was Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin’s story begins in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn introduced Anakin, 9, to his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin and Obi-Wan’s first encounter sets the tone for a friendship and a bond like brothers that no one thinks would eventually be destroyed due to jealousy and rivalry.

In a thread on Reddit, one Star Wars fan (TheHippyDragon) called out a scene in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which he believed was a mistake. The scene is a flashback of Anakin (Hayden Christensen) having a sparring session with Obi-Wan. After they trained, Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) praised Anakin for being a great warrior but warned him that his need to prove himself would be his downfall. The fan claimed it was an overlooked mistake because Qui-Gon (Liam Neeson) would have never done it, as he would never consider a Jedi a warrior.
The netizen’s sentiment received mixed reactions from other Star Wars fans. Some agreed that Jedi were not warriors, with one saying Obi-Wan Kenobi’s dialogue was a bad line. Another added that being a peacekeeper with a weapon was a big problem. However, many also argued that if Jedi were not expected to fight, they would not carry around their laser swords. A number also defended Obi-Wan’s line because Jedi sometimes fight to protect the weak, and it was among Anakin’s motivations for being a warrior. One fan believed that Obi-Wan’s line was accurate because he only wanted to acknowledge Anakin’s skill while warning him how overdoing it by proving himself could lead to his downfall.
The mixed opinions over the scene are understandable, and both sides are reasonable. Obi-Wan Kenobi was like an older brother to Anakin, which was probably why he sounded more lenient to the latter. Meanwhile, Qui-Gon Jinn was a father figure to Anakin, so if he were the one to train the latter, it would probably be different. Would Qui-Gon praise Anakin as a warrior? He probably would or wouldn’t, but what was certain was he asked Obi-Wan to train Anakin and even made Obi-Wan promise to do it in his final moments.
Jedi can be considered warriors because they are skilled in lightsaber combat and trained in the ways of the Force. However, they train not to be on the battlefield but to protect themselves against the Sith and potential emerging threats. Obi-Wan’s line was true because Anakin was indeed skilled as a warrior, but his desire to prove himself to be better than the person who trained him, fueled by envy, jealousy, and anger, brought him down.
In the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Vader had a confrontation, and the former didn’t kill the latter because he couldn’t do so while staring at Anakin’s burned face after he left him on Mustafar. Obi-Wan was remorseful and was still attached to the boy he raised but realized it was pointless to appeal to his humanity, as his former Padawan had already chosen the dark Side. The Jedi Master felt he was to blame for what happened to Anakin but understood it was not all his fault, so he just let him go. He decided to walk away because he couldn’t bring himself to kill Anakin. The decision was probably his last act of mercy or pity to his old pal and apprentice. Obi-Wan and Anakin’s falling-out was among the most tragic relationships in the Star Wars lore.
Obi-Wan Kenobi streams on Disney Plus.
