Mirio Togata, commonly known by his hero name Lemillion, is a true inspiration within My Hero Academia. Mirio is a classic example of hard work trumps talent, as his quirk ‘Permeation’ had been deemed an unmasterable ability due to the myriad of drawbacks accompanying it. The quirk posed a threat to the user and those around him, and its applications within the hero world were rather limited.

However, Mirio was able to turn this narrative around through sheer hard-work and perseverance, defying the notion of Permeation being a useless quirk. Still, there’s no denying that this quirk has many disadvantages, making it viable only in the right hands. Mirio has found many workarounds to these drawbacks, turning these weaknesses into strengths, a feat that showcases his keen intellect and resolve to become a hero.

Mirio’s Quirk: Permeation

In essence, Permeation turns Mirio entirely intangible, allowing him to phase through solid matter seamlessly. He can also pass through other people, as well as any incoming attacks. This makes Mirio entirely invincible in this form, since all sorts of attacks will simply phase through his body. However, Permeation is a rather complex quirk, and this also involves the ability to voluntarily permeate certain parts of the body.

Despite being a quirk that defies the laws of nature, Permeation is dictated by the principles of physics, forcing Mirio to find workarounds to these obstacles. Since Mirio’s entire body becomes intangible while the quirk is active, the surrounding environment also passes through his body, meaning he cannot perceive sound, light, and air in this state. This renders Mirio deaf, blind, and without breath the entire time Permeation is active, reducing the quirks’ overall active duration.

Permeation also features an interesting reaction with solid matter if the quirk is deactivated while the user is phasing through an object. Since objects that possess mass cannot overlap, Mirio’s body is repelled outward at high speeds if he were to deactivate his quirk in the middle of phasing. He can utilize this repelling property to charge at high speeds and catch his enemies off-guard. However, Mirio has to adjust his own angle and position before deactivating Permeation in order to ensure he achieves the required speed and direction.

Permeation’s Many Weaknesses

Permeation was initially deemed a useless quirk since it had no useful qualities that could aid any section of hero society. The quirk’s many drawbacks and disadvantages are what initially relegated it to the position of an unmasterable quirk, and Mirio still has to navigate through these pitfalls despite mastering Permeation. While Mirio is invincible in his permeated state, he cannot instantaneously activate the ability. This leaves him open to surprise attacks or unpredictable moves, taking away some part of his invincibility.

This quirk takes permeation in a literal sense, turning the user entirely intangible. This renders the user’s body unable to process light, sound, or air, making Mirio deaf and blind while he is phasing. This essentially means that he must accurately calculate where his opponents are before he phases out. This aspect of the quirk requires immense skill and practice, since it’s near-impossible to guess the direction of the opponents and the speed required before phasing out.

Another glaring drawback of Permeation is the constant regulation of its usage. If Mirio’s entire body permeates, he will plunge to the ground in a constant free-fall state. This forces him to always keep Permeation inactive in one of his feet. The entire ordeal requires immense concentration and practice as he has to keep some parts of his body tangible to stay above ground at all times. Moreover, Mirio has to alternate between activating and deactivating the quirk constantly in fights to land his blows while remaining invincible to the enemies’ offensive.

Mirio’s Ultimate Moves

Similar to any other Hero, Mirio boasts a few ultimate moves of his own, often used to land the finishing blow on his opponents. One move that Mirio often tends to use is the Blinder Touch Eyeball Crush, a technique that is as goofy as his oddball persona. Mirio pretends to poke his opponents’ eyes while intangible, distracting them for long enough to land the actual blow to their stomachs. While the technique may seem rather whacky, it’s highly effective in terms of distracting opponents and catching them off-guard.

Mirio’s true ultimate move is the Phantom Menace, an instantaneous offense that takes enemies by surprise. Using his quirk’s repellant quality, Mirio adjusts his angle while inside an object, deactivating the ability mid-phase to launch himself at high speeds. However, Mirio takes this move up a notch by phasing through multiple objects consecutively, achieving an extremely high speed that’s almost impossible for most to perceive.

My Hero Academia is available to stream on Prime Video.
