After being utterly defeated by Eren and his new abilities using the Founding Titan, the last-chance heroes are scattered to the winds, hanging on by a thread. Jean and Reiner find themselves hanging above the colossal titans below and must look their hopelessness in the eye, fearing that there is nothing they can do.

Reiner’s resolve falters, and he looks to Jean for answers. Jean replies with this line, letting all his fear out and still deciding to follow through because the Scout Regiment doesn’t know any better, which matches Jean’s character perfectly.

During the climax of the final episode, the survivors of the rumbling rejoice as Eren Jaeger’s plan is stopped just short of murdering the entire world. Armin, Reiner, and Mikasa succeeded in erasing Titans from the world, thanks to Eren. Reiner, now just a man with no honor to bring home to his family, confronts his mother and prepares for her disappointment in him no longer being the Armored Titan.

To Reiner’s surprise, his mother embraces him and cries, apologizing for taking him for granted. This is a beautiful moment for Reiner, who had one of the best character arcs in the entire series.
