Bosch: Legacy- Who Are Crate And Barrel?

Highlights

  • Crate and Barrel are iconic characters from the original series “Bosch” who have made guest appearances in “Bosch: Legacy.”
  • They were detectives in the Hollywood Division, known for their experience and crime-solving abilities.
  • The retired detectives may face scrutiny in the upcoming season of “Bosch: Legacy” due to their involvement in a pipeline explosion.

Bosch: Legacy was the big selling point when Amazon launched their ad-based streaming video service, Freevee back in 2022. The spin-off was a big hit and has had two seasons on the platform thus far, with a third season on the way. Prime Video streamed all seven seasons of the original Bosch series from 2014-2021, and many of the supporting cast have returned for guest appearances in Bosch: Legacy, with fan favorite comic relief double act, Detectives Robert ‘Crate’ Moore and Barrel Johnson (aka Crate and Barrel) turning up in both seasons.

The Hollywood division was disbanded in the final season of Bosch, and all the characters went their separate ways, with Harry Bosch leaving the LAPD altogether to set up as a private investigator. Crate and Barrel were set to retire, but when Bosch enlists their help in season 1, they are still on the LAPD’s books. However, when they resurfaced in Bosch: Legacy season 2, they were officially retired.

Crate and Barrel were detectives in the Hollywood Division for the entirety of Bosch‘s seven seasons. They were long-time partners in the force and had been around the block for many years. They aren’t the most agile of law enforcers, but they do have great experience and crime solving abilities. They handled the regular crimes in the Hollywood division, while Bosch took on the big homicide cases while obsessing over the unsolved cold cases that land on his desk.

They were due to retire at the end of Bosch, and their fate was left unanswered, until they returned for guest appearances in Bosch: Legacy season 1 in Episode 4’s ‘Horseshoes and Hand Grenades’ and Episode 5’s ‘Plan B’, when Bosch enlists their help with blowing up the pipeline to scupper Carl Rogers’ gas stealing plans. It is revealed they are both still on the police force, and they are more than happy to assist Bosch with his extracurricular activities.

Crate and Barrel returned again in Bosch: Legacy season 2 in Episode 2’s ‘Zzyzx’ when Bosch asks them to tail Kurt Dockweiler’s lawyer, James Rafferty, as he possibly holds the key to information that could lead to discovering where Maddie is being held. They are more than happy to help out their old colleague, especially as it may lead to Maddie’s safe return.

They reappear in Episode 3’s ‘Inside Man’ when Bosch visits them to tell them they may be implicated in the FBI’s investigation, for the help they gave Bosch in the pipeline explosion back in season 1. They both reveal they are retired now and not too worried about the whole thing with no risk to their careers now. They are more interested in bantering with Bosch, and he urges them to adjust their patter a little bit.

Who plays Crate and Barrel?

Gregory Scott Cummins and Troy Evans play Crate and Barrel respectively in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, and just like their characters, both actors have been around for many years, but in contrast to Crate and Barrel, they have no intentions of retiring anytime soon.

Gregory Scott Cummins is a character actor who has been around since the late 80s, and has worked consistently in television and movies. He is best known for playing heavies, but he is also known for his versatility, having played both comedic and dramatic roles.

Troy Evans broke into the business in the early 80s and has worked consistently in television and movies. He started out appearing as a guest star on shows like Lou Grant and Riptide, and later on in Hill Street Blues and Twin Peaks. He had supporting roles in movies like My Blue Heaven and Under Siege and hasn’t stopped working since.

The FBI investigation led by Agent William Baron in Bosch: Legacy season 2 appeared to be over towards the end of the season, appearing to put Crate and Barrel in the clear for their involvement in the pipeline explosion. However, Baron finds another way of getting to Bosch and Chandler through Maurice ‘Mo’ Bassi, meaning the retired detectives could be under scrutiny again in Bosch: Legacy season 3.

It hasn’t been announced if Gregory Scott Cummins and Troy Evans will be reprising their fan favorite roles of Crate and Barrel in the next season of Bosch: Legacy, but it’s highly likely they will be back based on them appearing in the first two seasons. It wouldn’t be the same without them in the Bosch universe, and despite them being retired now, it feels totally logical that they would return due to their continued involvement in Harry Bosch’s activities.
