10 Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime

There are dozens of great anime characters. Many of them are legendary and have gone on to inspire other amazing characters. Goku from Dragon Ball is one example of a great character that has a simple personality and design that fans have fallen in love with.

However, not every anime character is well-written. Characters need to have negative traits, but when those traits overshadow the positive ones, it leads to a very unlikeable character. A character that’s overly emotional, mean, or boring is hard for fans to relate to, which often leads to them becoming despised by the fan base.

10 Takemichi

Tokyo Revengers

Fans complain about Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia being a crybaby, but he’s nothing compared to Takemichi from Tokyo Revengers. Takemichi is the type of character that cries about how terrible his life is, but he never does anything to improve it.

Takemichi thinks he’s a tough guy capable of being a member of a gang, but he cowers whenever he’s faced with a challenge. He may be the protagonist, but he’s the least interesting and most annoying character in the show and fans aren’t afraid to say how much they can’t stand him.

9 Zenitsu

Demon Slayer

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_1″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_1.png”/>

Zenitsu may use an amazing breathing technique in Demon Slayer, but his fighting abilities are his only redeeming quality. From the moment he’s introduced, he’s loud and obnoxious. Loud characters, like Natsu from Fairy Tail, can be fun but Zenitsu is a pessimistic crybaby who harasses women.

The fact that Zenitsu can only use his Thunder Breathing technique when he’s sleeping is lame compared to the other characters who work hard for the power they have. Zenitsu has more potential than other poorly-written characters, but he’s barely shown any change, which isn’t promising.

8 Roberto De Niro

Trigun Stampede

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_2″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_2.png”/>

Fans were understandably outraged when Roberto replaced Milly in the new Trigun series Trigun Stampede. If he’d been an interesting character fans could have forgiven this choice, but Roberto is boring compared to everyone else in the series.

Roberto’s a stereotypical grumpy old man who smokes too much and bosses everyone around. Roberto doesn’t add anything new, so fans can’t help but wonder why he exists. Fans weren’t moved by his death at the end of the series. Roberto was too boring to get attached to so no one cared when he died.

7 Yuri

Spy X Family

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_3″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_3.png”/>

Most of the characters in Spy X Family are incredibly likable. Loid, Yor, and Anya are the perfect example of a found family that fans relate to. The hijinks they get up to are some of the best parts of the show.

There is one character that stands out in a bad way, though, and that’s Yor’s brother Yuri. He loves his sister in a creepy way that’s off-putting. His obsessive tirades are annoying, which makes him come across as a pest rather than a threat. Most fans wish Yor would tell him off, so he’d be less of a nuisance.

6 Boruto

Boruto

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_4″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_4.png”/>

After Naruto Shippuden ended, fans were hoping there would be a sequel series. An anime about Naruto‘s son Boruto was the last thing fans wanted. If Boruto was a likable character like Naruto, fans could have warmed up to him.

However, most fans see Boruto as a brat who constantly complains about his father. The negative attention Boruto receives is mostly due to the filler episodes, which take up a majority of the anime. However, the filler wouldn’t have a negative effect if Boruto was a likable character.

5 David Martinez

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_5″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_5.png”/>

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a fantastic story, but it’s held back by the dumb decisions David makes. At first, he’s a relatable punk making the best of a bad situation, but by the end, he’s an idiot that ignores the obvious. After Maine is affected by cyber-psychosis, it would’ve made sense for David to pull back on his use of cyberware.

Instead, David doubles down and after a time skip he is more cybernetic than human. It’s hard to feel sorry for him when he’s the cause of his own destruction and such an obvious end isn’t interesting. David’s change in personality was too sudden so many fans lost interest in his character.

4 Geordo

My Next Life As A Villainess: All Roots Lead To Doom!

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_6″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_6.png”/>

Geordo from My Next Life as a Villainess is supposed to be a stunning prince. Fans should love him just as much as they love other romantic characters like Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club.

However, Geordo lacks the charm and personality of his romantic counterparts. Geordo is one of many of Katarina’s groupies. He may be her fiancé, but he doesn’t spend any significant time with her. He’s just another romantic character with barely any personality, which is why he’s so forgettable.

3 Daisuke

The Millionaire Detective

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_7″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_7.png”/>

A detective solving crimes with money is an interesting idea. Unfortunately, The Millionaire Detective does a terrible job of executing it. Rich superheroes like Batman have the money to create amazing gadgets, but he still faces hardship.

Since Daisuke can solve everything with cash he’s nearly untouchable, which isn’t interesting. It doesn’t help that Daisuke is all looks and has no personality. He’s a rich jerk with no redeeming qualities, which is why most anime fans don’t like him.

2 Kazuya

Rent-A-Girlfriend

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_8″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_8.png”/>

Rent-a-Girlfriend isn’t the type of anime fans watch for the story, especially with such an unlikeable protagonist like Kazuya. From the get-go, Kazuya is a complainer who blames everyone else for his problems. He continues to go on paid dates with girls even though he seems to hate them.

Kazuya’s personality doesn’t evolve all that much as the series progresses. An anime like Rent-a-Girlfriendthat’s made to have fanservice isn’t usually known for having interesting characters, but most fanservice anime don’t have characters that are incredibly annoying.

1 Jin Mori

God Of High School

10 <a href=Worst Written Male Characters From 2020s Anime_9″ class=”lazyload” data-src=”https://static.animeranku.com/i/images/news/2023/7/11/10-worst-written-male-characters-from-2020s-anime_9.png”/>

God of High School is an anime with tons of potential that completely fell flat. Students enter a tournament to determine the strongest kid in high school, but the series devolves into mindless fighting and doesn’t expand on the characters.

This is especially true for the protagonist Jin Mori who is a stereotypical shonen hero. His personality is bland, and he doesn’t have any goals to make him more interesting. Some shonen heroes take inspiration from other anime, but Jin Mori is a carbon copy of every shonen hero, which makes for boring storytelling.
