A new manga project has been announced by the duo who created hits like Deadman Wonderland and Eureka SeveN. The new mangaka, Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou, have been working together on projects for many years now. Their manga are often popular and are turned into anime, so any new project from them is enough to get people excited.

The announcement came via Jinsei Kataoka’s X (formerly Twitter) page last Sunday. They did not reveal any more details at the time of the announcement beyond that it would be another collaboration with Kazuma Kondou. For now, everyone can only speculate about what the next project will be – but it is likely to have some kind of fantasy or science fiction focus, considering the duo’s previous projects together. It will almost certainly be shounen as well.

Deadman Wonderland was first published in 2006 and ran for 13 volumes through 2013. It was published in English by Tokyopop before the company was shut down, and later by Viz Media. It was adapted into an anime in 2011, running for 13 episodes, which were also released in English by Funimation the following year.

While Deadman Wonderland is arguably the duo’s most popular and successful work, they have also made several other manga together. Most recently, the pair finished publishing a fantasy manga about magical tattoos called Retropolis Scratch, which ran from July 2022 until September 8th, 2023. From 2015 to 2021, they also released a manga called Smokin’ Parade, which was a steampunk action story.

Retropolis Scratch was a significantly shorter project than any of Kataoka and Kondou’s previous works, by several years. While this has not been confirmed, we speculate that it could be already finished because the duo already has this new project coming, and it may be a bigger and better idea. It would be a legitimate reason for cutting Retropolis Scratch short or using it as a short bridge between larger projects.

Fans will likely have to wait a little while before we find out more about what Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou have in store for us next, sadly. But at least we have an explanation for why Retropolis Scratch ended after just a little over a year, and something new to look forward to. All the duo’s projects so far have had very original concepts from one another, so we will be looking forward to what kind of new Shounen story will be coming our way soon from the creators of Deadman Wonderland.

Deadman Wonderland is available to stream on Prime Video.
