One Piece manga is currently focused on the life of Bartholomew Kuma. The former Revolutionary turned pirate has been the center of attention for the last few chapters. Much about Bartholomew Kuma still remains a mystery, but it will be revealed in the upcoming chapters. In One Piece Chapter 1098, a new detail surfaced related to Ginny and Bonney that could drastically affect the story going forward. In the chapter, it was revealed that Ginny had a disease known as the Sapphire Scale while she was in Marijoa.

For this reason, Ginny’s husband abandoned her. Ginny had no other option but to go away with her daughter. She sailed alone with no help and finally reached the Sorbet Kingdom, where she contacted Kuma and the Revolutionary Army. Ginny told them how she was cast away by the Celestial Dragon. She tried to tell Kuma that she loved him, but sadly, he had already teleported to the Sorbet Kingdom. Upon his arrival, the people told him how Ginny died after being exposed to the natural light. It caused her skin to harden and turn blue. This disease is similar to the Amber Lead Syndrome, which destroyed almost the entire population of Flevance. However, Ginny’s condition is different and called the Sapphire Scale Disease.

What Is The Sapphire Scale Disease?

It is unknown how Ginny contracted the disease. There is a chance that she had the disease already, but it wouldn’t make sense that the disease never affected her until she was in Marijoa. The most logical explanation is that Ginny got infected when she was in the Holy Land. This means that she got the disease from a Celestial Dragon or maybe a God Knight. Considering she was taken to be the bride of a Celestial Dragon, it doesn’t seem likely that she would come into contact with another slave.

After she got the disease, Ginny’s time in Marijoa came to an end. Her husband most likely got scared and left her to avoid getting infected by her. Unfortunately, this disease was passed down to Bonney, but she didn’t exhibit the symptoms until she grew up a bit. Kuma found a blue stone under her right eye, and he got nervous. This led to Kuma quitting the Revolutionary Army because he wanted to devote all his time to caring for Bonney. Eventually, he met a doctor who told him about Bonney’s disease. The doctor revealed that it was called the Sapphire Scale disease, and it was not treatable with the current scientific technology. He also warned Kuma that exposure to any kind of natural light would worsen Bonney’s condition and harden her skin. Bonney’s body would become just like Ginny’s. He also disclosed that even if Bonney stayed away from light, the disease would catch up and kill her. The doctor told Kuma that, at best, Bonney had five years to live.

How Did Bonney Survive?

With the doctor confirming that it was almost impossible for the illness to be cured, the question is: how has Bonney managed to survive for so long? The simple answer is that Bonney was cured by Dr. Vegapunk. During one of the earlier conversations in the Egghead arc, Bonney confirmed that she used to come to the laboratory when she was a kid. It wouldn’t make sense for the daughter of a Revolutionary to be allowed into the most prized World Government facility unless Kuma made a deal with the organization.

Kuma wanted to save Bonney so that she could live a normal life. So, it wouldn’t be surprising that he decided to become a test subject for the World Government in exchange for a cure. This would explain why Kuma and Bonney spent time in Vegapunk’s laboratory. It has been stated many times that Vegapunk technology is years ahead of anyone else, so if anyone had the necessary tools to cure Bonney, it would be him. It seems that after curing the disease, the stone under Bonney’s right eye was also removed. For some reason, she placed an anti-eyebrow near the same place.

Of course, Bonney wouldn’t know about the deal between Kuma and Vegapunk. So, it was natural that she blamed him for Kuma’s condition. This explains why Bonney sought out the scientist and entered the New World. Sadly, she was captured by Blackbeard, after which she was taken by Akainu. It is unknown why Bonney wasn’t killed by the World Government, but it is likely that her Celestial Dragon father intervened. Although it is highly unlikely, it is unwise to rule out the possibility completely.

After touching Kuma’s memory bubble on Egghead Island, she probably found out about everything that happened in the past that is why she attacked Jaygarcia Saturn, whom she called her father’s murderer. One thing is for sure: Bonney is an important character, and she will definitely be involved in more arcs in the future.
