Spy X Family brings a much-needed dash of wholesomeness to shonen anime. Similar to other unusual slice-of-life series in recent memory, Spy X Family offers more than just the chill vibes of day-to-day activities. It does a great job mixing action-heavy scenarios with heartwarming family life. And this is only possible due to the Forger Family’s unusual members. With Bond Forger’s adoption, their whacky family is finally complete.
The Forger Family may be a family in name, but none of its members share any blood relation. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t care about the other members. Each Forger genuinely cares about their family members, and they show it in their own unique ways. Interestingly, each of them also possesses a rather unusual trait.
The Father, Loid Forger, Is a Top-ranking Spy
Spy X Family’s main protagonist, Loid Forger, is the top spy in Westalis. He has mastery over numerous skills, which allow him to execute his missions flawlessly. While he is known to most of the Spy X Family’s denizens as Loid Forger, his real name remains to be unknown. His superiors and colleagues refer to him using his codename Twilight. As the country’s best agent, Loid Forger has accomplished countless missions, saving the country and keeping peace on multiple occasions. He only assumes the identity of Loid Forger as part of his most recent and biggest mission yet, Operation Strix.
Operation Strix has only one goal — to keep the friendly relationship between Westalis and Ostania. He must befriend the chairman of Ostania’s National Unity Party, Donovan Desmond, and learn of any seditious activity he is insinuating. However, the only social events Donovan attends are the ones held by Eden Academy. As such, Twilight is tasked to form a family and make his child attend said academy. Creating a biological family, of course, is not feasible due to time constraints. Twilight is then forced to adopt a child and marry in order to upkeep the perfect family image, leading to the formation of the Forger Family. Twilight then assumes the identity of Loid Forger, a widower of two years single-handedly raising his child.
Yor Forger Is a Ruthless, Veteran Assassin
Similar to Loid Forger, Yor also has a secret identity. She is a veteran assassin known as the Thorn Princess, and she has already taken has ruthlessly eliminated every target thrown her way. Since she and her brother, Yuri Briar, were orphaned at an early age, Yor was forced to raise him all on her own. She was recruited by an organization called Garden in her youth, and trained to become one of their best assassins. Yor used her paychecks to pay for her and her brother’s living expenses until Yuri ultimately became a diplomat and gets employed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But while Yuri no longer needs her assistance, financially, Yor continues to accept assassination missions from the organization.
During the day, Yor works as an employee of the Berlint City Hall. She doesn’t really bother with romance and relationships. But that changes when her coworkers brought up how suspicious single women in their late twenties are. In addition to lying to her brother about getting married, Yor is forced to come up with a fake relationship plan. The first time Yor meets Twilight is at a boutique. Yor mistakes Loid’s marital status, leading to an exchange of apologies. The two hit it off and agree to pretend to be each other’s partners. But instead of a temporary agreement, it eventually leads to a semi-permanent one.
The Young Anya Forger Can Read Minds
Since conceiving a child is literally impossible with Operation Strix’s tight deadline, Loid Forger had to resort to adoption. That is also how Anya first meets her adoptive father. Loid is searching for a smart kid, since he aims to send them to Eden Academy. Anya is quick to realize this using her mind-reading ability. But instead of getting scared, the idea of saving the world entices her. She uses her supernatural ability to trick Loid into thinking she is far more intelligent than she seems. And she succeeds.
Anya may not be the brightest, but she is the only character aware of the others’ hidden identities. She also knows what will happen if her adoptive parents’ secret identities get exposed. As such, she goes out of her way to help them accomplish their missions in a not-so-obvious manner. Since she knows how vital her role in Operation Strix is, she also takes it upon herself to befriend Damian Desmond and save the world.
Bond Forger Has The Ability To See The Future
The last and most recent member to join the Forger Family is the dog — Bond Forger. Like the other members, Bond is no ordinary canine. He is a highly trained and intelligent dog that is also known as Subject 8. Bond is part of an Ostanian project called “Project Apple” that aims to produce intelligent animals. The various experiments conducted on him have resulted in Bond developing the ability to see the future. When the project is terminated by the current regime, most of the subjects end up in the black market, including Bond.
After ending up in the black market, Bond eventually falls into the hands of the terrorist group led by Keith Kepler. Anya stumbles upon him as she pokes her nose into the terrorists’ activity. Unsurprisingly, the girl gets captured. Bond then saves her from the terrorists’ grasp and helps her solve the case. Afterward, Anya begs Loid and Yor to make Bond a permanent member of the Forger Family.
