Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga first appeared in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in September 2009, and its final chapter released in April 2021. With over 110 million copies in circulation around the world, the series stands as one of the best-selling manga in history, alongside Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy and Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. During its initial serialization, Attack on Titan won multiple prestigious awards, including Best Shōnen Manga at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 2011 and Best Manga Series at the Sugoi Japan Awards in 2015.

Attack on Titan’s Unexpected Twist

Set in a brutal post-apocalyptic world where humanity hides from the titular man-eating monsters in walled-off cities, the narrative follows Eren as he endeavors to exterminate all Titans. While the story positions Eren as its main hero early on, the plot eventually sees him transform into humanity’s greatest enemy. According to the mangaka, Eren’s nuanced moral characterization in Attack on Titan reflects the worst parts that Isayama sees within himself, which ties into Attack on Titan’s themes of overcoming the darker aspects of human nature.

Wit Studio (Ranking of Kings) animated the first three seasons of the manga’s anime adaptation, with MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen) taking over production for the fourth and final season, which the studio has split into several parts. Attack on Titan: The Final Season – Part 3 debuted on March 4 and is set to depict the events of the final chapters of Isayama’s manga. During a panel at last year’s Anime NYC convention, the mangaka revealed his feelings about the story’s controversial ending, saying, “I still struggle on this point.”

Anime-only viewers experienced some of the controversial elements during Part 3’s intense premiere. Most notably, the episode featured the tragic death of a fan-favorite character. One of the animators who worked on the scene took to social media to grieve alongside fans. In the post, the animator wrote, “I’m glad I was able to create the most heart-wrenching scene with my own work.”

All the Attack on Titan anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
